Digging through Generations: Sustaining Family Land in Arkansas
Food and Fellowship 1-2pm
CLE from 2-4pm
In-person attendance encouraged, Zoom option available
Register Here (by October 14 to guarantee lunch!)
Kicking off a series on heirs’ property, this CLE will review the Uniform Partition of Heirs’ Property Act, invite attorneys — both seasoned and young, rural and urban alike — to share their experiences with existing barriers to practice in the field, and begin to address navigating the top issues/mishaps with heirs’ property litigation in the state. As such, this session will seek to tap the wisdom of the room.
Information shared will include the role heirs’ property work can play in furthering economic equity, how the act improves access and legal protections for everyday Arkansans even as more remains to be done, and further education on the mechanisms by which land is bought, sold, and developed under the UPHPA. Emphasis will be placed on identifying the potential locked up in family land, the opportunities for Arkansas families, and the chance for attorneys to invest in/for a thriving state. We will map out the strength and importance of legal intervention to really making a difference, and both the benefits and challenges of taking on clients.
The session will conclude by discussing additional resources, and ongoing work on the subject, and collect attendees’ input as to what heirs'-property-specific topics they would like to see addressed in-depth for future CLEs in the series.
